MATTERHORN | Gornergrat

Rating: 5 out of 5.

This business of site seeing is nearing its end as we are now in Zermatt for the truly final part of the trip. After all the long-distance train travel we’ve done, the 2.5 hours it took to get here was a breeze, especially since the trains we’ve been on have luckily been crowd-free and as always on time, and deciding to leave our luggage at the train stations was brilliant leaving us with literally less baggage to carry around. So for this trip carrying an overnighter isn’t a big deal even when we decided to go straight from Zermatt station to Gornergrat, the last stop on the Matterhorn cogwheel train. Dropping our bags at the Gornergrat station lockers, we were able to wander unimpeded in the very sunny and cold perimeter of the Matterhorn. While it would have been perfect to see the total majesty of the famous peak, sad to say clouds were permanently hanging over it even after we had spent several hours staring at it in anticipation, most of it over a delicious and expensive self-service lunch located in the station complex. After about 4 hours it was decided to call it quits and go back to the town to check in and maybe get lucky later on. Unfortunately it looks like a return trip will have to be made  before Mattie will give in and show all her true colors.
