When I lived in Rotterdam years ago, the area around Rotterdam Central Station was a construction zone that was forever a work in progress. The mess, the chaos, the inconvenience back then. When I went back yesterday and stopped for lunch, it was like another city altogether. Sadly the annoyingly unreliable battery of my iPhone – Apple I am seriously becoming a non-fan – conked out before I could snap the beautifully done central station, but thankfully not before I got to enjoy a very nice, relaxing meal at a famous grand cafe just across the street. The Cafe Engels was a place we went to for drinks and apple pie way back when and with the old furniture and dark lighting, it looked long past its prime. This time around they cleaned up and renovated, with design furniture and lighting all around, and it’s looking as good as ever. The food wasn’t too bad either. I may not miss Rotterdam and my life spent here but it looks like there are some things worth making new memories about.
