We were in Paleis Het Loo the weekend before last and got reacquainted with how Dutch royals made do on a day to day basis. Given the huge number of rooms and the sprawling, Versailles-like garden, it couldn’t have been easy keeping up appearances – it certainly gives one perspective on how people on the other side of the fence exist. Not that I’d want to live in such an environment, but the general atmosphere, though attractive at first, made me feel ambivalent and conflicted.
A royal palace though deserves a royal repast, and my thoughts about the distinctive locale that we were in were in the end balanced off by the sweet prosecco, local cheese, and the chocolates that sat on our table. The genius loci turned out to be, in the end, all in my mind.
