A Family Dinner

The closest thing I have to family in these parts was very kind enough to host us for dinner at their favorite Chinese place – maybe the only Chinese place – in Maassluis town. It was a belated celebration dinner for my partner’s birthday a couple of weeks ago, and it was delicious. Given how long I’ve lived here though, it still surprises me what they serve in Chinese restaurants – we ended up ordering Indonesian, Surinamese, and maybe a handful of other cuisines all at once. It was all great, in any case, and I left with a slight paunch and a ton of guilt afterwards, along with the feeling of how lucky I was to have some of the nicest people to adopt me as one of their own.
