Much to my dismay and lack of willpower, I wasn’t able to make it to Erasmus Park to see Buena Vista Social Club broadcast and performed live from the sold-out Concertgebouw. Wish I could have gone and seen them along with some work colleagues but I wasn’t feeling too hot and felt as lethargic as a slug. Thank god I live in this century as I discovered it was streaming live online so I got to at least enjoy the concert from my couch –  and in fantastic HD at that, it was almost like being there!

I now regret not having gone as I’m almost sure it would’ve been fun – I just didn’t feel like dressing up, stopping for munchies, and shlepping all the way there via public transport. It was one of those moments when I wished that going out here was as easy as it is in the States, that my partner and I had more common interests and went out more as a couple. As it is, we have very few pursuits in common which is a drag in times like these.

With so much character and soul, lively and at times haunting, this is the kind of music that’s best heard in a more cozy setting. Think small club in Havana, which if I’m good enough I would be lucky to go see for myself someday. Throw in some sangrias and paella and I’d be the happiest hombre. In the meantime, I’ll have to content myself with these temporary alternatives.
