JOSELITO TAPAS | Amsterdam

It took a bit of cajoling but I finally got to convince the girls at the office to go out for tapas. After I’d heard my Spanish colleagues say that there was a good place right here in Amsterdam, I couldn’t wait to see it for myself. It’s been so long I can’t even remember the last time I had tapas – good or bad. My failed attempt at A La Plancha last year certainly doesn’t count. I remember going to both Taberna del Alabardero and Jaleo in DC a million years ago and enjoying it, not even giving it a second thought back then how good they were and how lucky I was. It’s all become just a hazy memory at this point. Hard to believe that after nearly five years of living here in the Netherlands, this was only the first time I’ve had Spanish tapas in this country, and if memory serves, the first time in Europe.

Off we went right after work yesterday to Joselito where we luckily found our spot alfresco. Very quickly we ordered a pitcher of Sangria (overpriced, naturally) and soon after I finally got my first taste since who knows when. The weather was perfect, the first sip of sangria was terrific, and the company even better. In no time, we had a parade of dishes fill our tiny, little table.

Wish I could say I had my first European tapas in Madre Espana but as they say all good things come to those who wait. Mark my words, I’ll make it there someday! The plates could very well be a good introduction to European-Spanish tapas but if I’m reading between the lines well enough, it’s safe to say they’ll pale in comparison with the real thing. I’m especially eager to go to Barcelona, Madrid, and Sevilla now that I’ve reconnected with my then-previous and now-current Spanish colleagues. Before we parted ways, the ladies promised to make tapas for us, the thought of which instantly brought a smile to my face. Marta and Miriam, I’m holding you to it!
